Less is more in terms of scents for pets! Animals have a keen sense of smell, so using aromatherapy as a natural alternative to treat behavioural and physical ailments can be extremely effective. The main thing to remember with aromatherapy with pets, is “less is more”. One drop can go a very long way for our pets.
A positive association with essential oils is very important for best results.
Take, for instance, using aromatherapy to help alleviate the fear of thunderstorms. If you were to introduce essential oils for the first time DURING a thunderstorm, the scent would then be associated with the scary thunderstorm. This would significantly reduce any receptiveness to the aroma. By introducing prior to the scary thunderstorm in a positive manner we can create positive association.
A great way to introduce our pets is to take the oil, go to a quiet, happy place you and your animal enjoy, and then slowly introduce the oil while having fun and relaxing.
Another good example is using essential oils for separation anxiety. If you apply the oil just as you jet out the door – your pet will associate that aroma with you leaving – their big fear. Alternatively, if you wear the scent, the dog associates with the aroma with you – so then over time, having the aroma of “you/the oil blend” on them when you leave, helps to comfort them and allow them to “Chill”.
Some pet parents have mentioned that their dog didn’t like other branded essential oil blends because they were too strong and overpowering. One dog mom told me their dog would actually run away when the oils came out! This supports our theory that “Less is more”.

Originally created and loved under Daisy Paw Collar Companion®, this innovative idea helped introduce a gentler, more natural approach to pet care. Almost 18 years ago, Diesel, my soul dog, reacted to a veterinary topical that was said to be safe, and also effective against fleas and ticks – that very day, I set out to find a natural approach to prevent fleas & ticks….which lead me to Daisy Paw Collar Companion®. Over the years I have been the largest advocate for the product and recommend it to all of our friends, family and puppy parents. In 2025, I learned the lovely owner of Collar Companion®, Wendy England, was retiring, so I promptly reached out to see how we could keep this awesome product going.
Today, I’m honored to carry that legacy forward—refining, reimagining, and expanding it under the Lab Mom® brand. This isn’t just a product. It’s something I’ve trusted, used, and stood behind for years—and now, I’m proud to share it with a new generation of pet lovers.
